How to Clean Your Eyelash Estensions

Why do I need to use Baking Soda?

Baking Soda is mildly antiseptic and very soothing to the eyes, helping to calm allergic reactions and neutralise impurities like chlorine. It adjusts the PH and it makes the baby shampoo a more effective cleanser and buffers the gas produced by the glue when it is curing, reducing possibilities of sensitivity. The combination of baby shampoo and baking soda is one often recommended by opthalmologists to care for eye conditions and irritations.

Why do I need to use bottled water?

We need a clean mixture, free of the bacteria, that is likely to be lurking around taps, kitchens and bathrooms.

What is the foam pumper for?

The specialised foamer bottle takes the liquid and injects air as it dispenses, to foam the product, making the “lash poo” mixture into a foam, which makes it very easy for the cleanser to get between the lashes. The soapy foam’s high water and air content also makes it easy to rinse away, leaving the lashes squeaky clean, without any residue.

So, how do I wash my extensions?

This part is very easy! Make up the “Lash Poo”, using the simple recipe. Take a small ball of foam in your fingers and keeping your eyes closed, move the foam over your lashes. No need to rub at them at all, just use gentle strokes, from the root to the tip. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. You can leave them to dry naturally, or if you want to, you can lightly blow dry them on a low heat. You can gently brush through your lashes with the enclosed wand.

Recipe for “Lash Poo”

Take the following ingredients and add them to your foam pumper:
1 part baby shampoo
3 parts bottled, or purified water (NOT tap water)
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
OR
Use Sterilid ($15, walgreens.com)
OR
Ultra Calm Foaming Cleanser (CVS)

You can just pat them dry, no need for blow dryer unless you want too!

What's the Story With Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation?

Dark areas... freckles... uneven skin tone... dull complexion... sun spots... liver spots... discoloration... these are all ways to describe something that most of us deal with at one time or another — hyperpigmentation. But what exactly is hyperpigmentation, how did we end up with it, and how can we get rid of it, so we can get our beautiful even complexion back, and move on with our lives? Let’s dive in and find out!

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is most simply described as an uneven discoloration of the skin. Excess pigmentation in the skin causes skin cells to become darker than the ones around them, creating dark patches of skin that stand out from the rest.

Melanin is the pigment that gives color to our skin, and when excess melanin is produced, areas of the skin become darker, causing hyperpigmentation to occur.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Medications: Some medications can cause skin to be ultra sensitive to sun exposure, making it more likely that dark spots will occur. Cancer treatments, some antibiotics, acne drugs, and anti-seizure medications are among some of the most likely culprits to watch out for.

Hormones: If you’ve ever been pregnant, you’ve likely heard of (or been a victim of) the “mask of pregnancy.” Otherwise known as Melasma, this hormone induced darkening of the skin, usually on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, belly, and hands, gets worse with sun exposure, and is due to an increase in hormones coursing through the body.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Sometimes after an injury, the skin at the site of the injury will be dark for at time. This is commonly seen with acne scarring and is the body’s natural reaction to inflammation.

Too much sun: Overexposure to the sun can give you a nice glow, but over time it can also leave behind sun spots, age spots, and discoloration on the hands and face.

Getting Rid of Hyperpigmentation

Now for the big question? Can we get rid of our hyperpigmentation and have the bright, clear complexion we want?

The answer is yes, according to Jennifer Linder, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs skin cancer surgeon. “The good news,” says Dr. Linder, who herself struggled with hyperpigmentation as an adult, “is that with the right combination of professional treatments and daily care products, we can lift existing hyperpigmentation and inhibit its continual formation.”

Steps to Treat Hyperpigmentation

Prevention

The first step in treating hyperpigmentation is to begin the process of prevention. While in some cases there is little you can do about hormone levels, we can control the amount of UV light we expose our skin to. Protect your skin from the sun by applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and remember to reapply every two hours.

Meet with a professional

Next, make an appointment with your favorite licensed esthetician and put a game plan together. Depending on the severity of the pigmentation problem, and how much it bothers you, there are many options available to you:

Skin brightening and lightening products

Products designed to lessen the effects of hyperpigmentation can be incorporated into your daily routine to gradually diminish dark spots and dull skin.

Typical ingredients effective in reducing hyperpigmentation, and typically found in reputable products include hydroquinone, arbutin, kojic acid, and azelaic acid. PCA skin has an excellent line of products to treat varying degrees of hyperpigmentation, such as the Pigment Bar and the Pigment Gel. A trip to visit your licensed esthetician will help you determine which products would be best for your particular type and severity of pigmentation.

Chemical peels

To increase cell turnover and help lighten pigmentation, a professional can administer a chemical peel which can help minimize nearly all types of hyperpigmentation. These typically include higher levels of ingredients found in your over-the-counter skin lightening products, and usually work faster. Always employ the expertise of a licensed professional who can help you determine which treatments will best help your particular situation.

Microdermabrasion

Another option is Microdermabrasion, which is another way of removing darkened skin and improving cell turnover. The procedure also boosts collagen production, which can result in a more even looking skin tone.

Micro-needling or Dermarolling

Using a procedure where tiny needles are injected at a rapid rate into the skin, either with an electric pen or a roller device, the deep layers of skin that cannot be reached with chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, or lightening treatments are targeted.

A very small amount of damage is caused beneath the skin...just enough to inspire the body to dissolve old tissue and produce new collagen and cells at a rapid rate, turning over younger healthier skin with a bright clear tone.

Micro-needling and dermarolling is essentially painless, as the needles are very small and short. It feels very similar to microdermabrasion actually, and the depth of the needles are adjustable. If a more aggressive approach is required, a numbing cream is used to make the process comfortable for all involved.

Everything You Need to Know About Eyelash Extensions

While a few lucky women were blessed with long luscious lashes, some of us gals weren’t favored in this department. Mascara can help, but it can be time consuming to apply, and can leave smudgy rings under your eyes after just a few hours of wear. More and more savvy women are finding that the smart way to go is having eyelash extension applied.

Professional eyelash extensions solve a lot of beauty problems for women:

1. You instantly get long, thick, beautiful eyelashes.

2. No more mascara application. You’ll save some time in the morning on application, and in the evening on removal.

3. If you are a curler, you’ll no longer be putting any stress on the follicle, so the hair will actually be healthier and lashes thicker.

4. Your eyes will be less prone to irritation and infection without any mascara products being poked and prodded around so close to your sockets.

Here’s what you need to know before you get lash extensions…

1. Don’t go to just anyone. Find a licensed esthetician who has a great reputation and stellar word-of-mouth. Look on her Facebook page, check Yelp, and call for referrals.

2. Once you find a reputable salon or technician, relax. It doesn’t hurt. Your certified lash technician will either gently tape your lower lashes down, or weigh them down with moist pads, to keep them out of the way of her glue, and you will relax comfortably while she nimbly glues individual lashes to each of your existing lashes. There’s no poking or pulling, but the work does require skill and dexterity, so you do want someone with experience.

3. Lash extensions won’t damage your existing lashes. Your real lashes will shed and grow in their normal growth cycle, but will otherwise remain the same. Once the glue is dry and set, after the first 24 hours, you can brush and separate your lashes, and shower normally.

4. You can get lash extensions in several types of materials (such as synthetic, silk, and mink) and lengths, and they can be applied using various types of glue. Each salon and technician will have her own preference, and she will be able to help you find the best fit for you. Take caution to avoid salons that use glue containing formaldehyde, as this can be harmful.

5. Expect the first full application of lashes to take two hours. Each subsequent touch up will take roughly half an hour each week, or one hour every two weeks to maintain, as lashes will naturally fall out over time. Your eyes will be closed during the application process so there is little change of any glue getting into your eye.

For some, lash extensions are an indulgence to be savored periodically for the yearly Xmas party or a wedding. For others, the constant compliments on their heightened beauty, and the time saving liberation of throwing that old mascara in the trash is well worth the trip down to the Stonehouse Spa and Boutique once every week or two for a lash fill. We invite you to give it a try. You never know, you might just fall in love:)

3 Quick Tips to Better Hydrate That Summer Skin

Cracked itchy skin is irritating! Not to mention it’s hardly complimentary.

We could go on and on about the challenges we face with our skin, but the truth is, you already know the problem. What you really want to know is the solution.

Here’s how you can help hydrate and get beautiful skin from the inside out:

Eat Your Water

Even though most people would guess that drinking water would come up first on the list, we’re going to go with the experts on this one and put eating your water at the top.

Top beauty experts and nutritionists agree that the best way to hydrate your skin is to fill up on the nutrient dense foods that contain the water you need to hydrate.

Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, lemon, and cucumber contain valuable water, and also vitamins and minerals, that your body can use to replenish stores and repair damaged cells.

Take Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps reduce signs of aging and hydrates skin by helping retain collagen and keeping cells healthy and plump, thus making you look youthful and vibrant.

Be sure to get plenty of Vitamin C rich foods, such as bell pepper, broccoli, and citrus, but consider a supplement as well to be sure you are getting adequate amounts.

To help support this step, consider using PCA Skin care C-Quench® Antioxidant Serum to with bioavailable forms of Vitamin C to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles from the outside.

Get Your Beauty Rest

When we rest our head is when our body is working hard to repair damaged cells to tip top working condition. All the vitamins and support in the world won’t amount to much if we don’t get the down time we need to revitalize.

Most experts agree that a healthy amount of sleep for the average adult is anywhere between 6-9 hours, depending on the person and age. Creating a consistent pattern of sleep will allow your largest bodily organ, your skin, to adequately repair and completely beautify.
Do your part this summer to get your skin healthy, hydrated, and glowing by eating water rich foods, getting plenty of Vitamin C, and making the commitment to get your beauty rest. Our bodies are amazing machines when we give them the right tools!

Also stop by and see us for some pampering too. We have some amazing PCS Skin treatments in our magic toolbox as well, and our specials this month are specifically aimed at getting your skin hydrated and glowing.

And don’t forget to take advantage of our discounted Age Defy Facials this month for only $85! Purchase one for you or a friend or loved one today and strut into summer feeling fantastic.

How do I relieve Dark Circles, Puffiness and Eye Fatigue?

The skin around the eyes is very delicate and thinner than most other areas of the face. It has no oil glands and a fine texture. This area requires special care and reflects neglect, abuse, aging, stress, internal health and lifestyle very easily. In fact, dark circles around the eyes can also develop due to hereditary factors, lack of sleep, illness, stress and nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, along with external treatment, it is advisable to take these aspects into consideration in order to establish the cause and bring about the necessary changes.

Externally - you can use an eye cream.  There are three main ingredients to look for in an eye cream:

1. retinol which is an anti-wrinkle agent,
2. Vitamin K which is also known as Phytonadione, which can plump up the eye area and decrease dark circles
3. Vitamin C which reduces puffiness, dark circles & wrinkles.

Eye fatigue can also be relieved with washing. Wash your eyes with warm water and follow this with cold water. This improves blood circulation to the eyes and soothes them. It also cleanses the eyes and relieves congestion.

Below are some home remedies to reduce dark circles under the eyes:

1. cover your eyelids with slices of raw potato or cucumber for 15-20 minutes then wash with warm water
 2. Use a cucumber, squeeze it to remove its juice and refrigerate. Make a mixture of lemon juice, lanolin cream and cucumber juice and apply around the eye for 10-15 minutes.
3. Apply lemon juice on the black circles 2 times a day.
4. Make a paste of turmeric powder with pineapple juice and apply to the dark circles under the eyes.
5. Apply crushed mint around the eye area
 6. Apply almond oil under eyes. Almond helps to remove dark circles and is an excellent "skin food". Remove the cream applied around the eye after 10 min.

Another option is to use a moisturizer containing five percent niacinamide. A study was done using this cream and after four weeks, the hyperpigmentation and skin color were analyzed by computer and most patients experienced decreased hyperpigmentation and increased skin lightness. Topical niacinamide has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a potential treatment for puffy eyes and dark circles.

Puffiness Prevention

• A healthy well balanced diet is key but there’s new info that says eating two kiwis a day in yogurt can help to eliminate bags.

• Drink Plenty of H20. Drinking water helps flush the toxins from your body as well as reduce water retention. Try restricting caffeine as this can also bloat you.

• Cut the salt. This is such a simple little tip with big results. Try limiting salt for a week and notice the difference.

Nautral Remedies

• Place cotton balls soaked in milk under your eyes for a few minutes. The lactic acid in the milk helps reduce puffiness and darkness.

• Take protective eye wear or swim goggles; fill with water and freeze. Place on eyes for five minutes.

• Freeze a couple of spoons over night. In the morning rest them on your eyes until they are not cold any longer. If you make an effort to do this every morning you will see a big difference in about two weeks.

• Slice one small piece off of a potato, and cut the slice in half. Put each slice under your eyes and leave them under your eyes for 20 minutes.

• Place two thin lemon slices directly onto your bags or circles. Don’t squeeze your eyes tightly but be careful not to open. After 20 minutes carefully rinse off with cold water.

• Soak two cucumbers in lemon juice for 3-5 minutes. To help get rid of dark circles and puffiness place cucumbers on your eyes for about 10-15 minutes.

Spray Tanning Vs The Sun?

Choose Spray Tanning over the Sun

Did you know that if you suffered sunburn 3 or more times during your lifetime, you double the chance of skin cancer? Quite scary. And did you know that UVA rays in tanning beds penetrate much deeper than UVB rays from the sun? The result is that tanning beds do damage to your skin on much deeper level. There is quite a lot of evidence that tanning beds also greatly increase the risk of skin cancer.

When you look closely at different tanning methods, spray tan prices becomes truly affordable. Spray tanning not only saves you real dollars, but also helps you to maintain beautiful skin your whole life.

If you spray tan regularly, your skin gets accustomed to the solution, and holds the tan much longer. To get to this stage, you will need about 3 sessions 5 days apart. From then on you can spray tan every 2 weeks, provided that you learn how to use tan extending products properly.

Preparing for a Spray Tan is critical to a long lasting effect. If your skin is properly prepared by removing as much of the loose, dead skin layer as you can - especially in places like knees, ankles and elbows, the solution will adhere evenly to your whole body. You will look great and not only that, your tan will last a whole lot longer.

Exfoliate: Use exfoliating products that do not contain any oils, otherwise the oily barrier can stop the spray tanning solution getting through. Don’t wear any deodorant, moisturizer or makeup.Wear loose clothing.  Shave or wax one or two days before a spray tan.

Caring for spray tan involves moisturizing like crazy. Moisturizer that includes DHA for extending your tan, are worth investing in.

Use gentle shower products:  gentle body wash will be much better for your spray tanned skin.Avoid things that will exfoliate your skin excessively. How about hot, luxurious bath after your spray on tan? I don’t think so! That will make your skin exfoliate faster, as will rolling in the sand on the beach. A short swim in the sea will not take much off however, but a swim in the chlorinated pool will. (Chlorine will not exfoliate the tan, it will bleach it).

Enjoy good health and a great tan - choose spray tan by a professional.  Call me and check HERE for more details - Rhaina Butler 530 305 3908 - Auburn, CA

What is a Paraffin Wax Treatment?

What is Paraffin Wax?
Paraffin wax is a softer wax because of the paraffin oil component. Because it is a soft wax, it melts at a lower than normal temperature. This means that the skin can be submerged in the wax without causing burning or blistering. Spa specialists melt blocks of paraffin wax in special vats. During paraffin wax treatments, beauticians have their clients dip their hands or feet into the melted wax one or more times to coat the skin in a generous layer. The hands or feet are then wrapped in plastic, or some other non-absorbent material and left to "soak" in the layer of wax for up to half an hour.

What is a Paraffin Wax Treatment?
Paraffin wax treatments are luxurious spa treatments that are intended to moisturize and soften the skin. Paraffin wax treatments are most often applied to the hands and feet as components of manicures and pedicures respectively. Paraffin wax is unlike more common spa wax that is used for hair removal on the face and body. That type of wax is much more viscous and bonds to the skin.

What happens during a Paraffin Wax Treatment?
Paraffin wax treatments are particular popular in the winter because they are warming and because they help moisturize dry and cracked skin. During paraffin wax treatments, the skin is bathed in warmth, which helps the pores to open and the skin to soften. Because the treatments are meant to be soothing, calming oils are often added to the wax in order to add a dimension of aromatherapy to the experience.

Once the skin has been allowed to soak in the wax and the layer has hardened, it can be pulled off in one solid piece. Because the wax is soft and contains oil, it does not become very stiff and does not adhere to the skin. Rather, after a paraffin wax treatment, the skin is left slick and soft.

Who should have a Paraffin Wax Treatment?
People who experience seasonal dry skin often find paraffin wax treatments to be helpful and relaxing preventative measures. Dry, cracked heels and knuckles can make cold weather unbearable. One or two moisturizing paraffin wax treatments can help a great deal during snowy months. If you are interested in purchasing paraffin wax treatments for yourself or as gifts, get in touch with the spas in your area to see if they are offered.

What is Aromatherapy & Essential Oils?

What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the practiced use of essential oils from various plants for healing. Although the actual term, aromatherapy, might make it sound as if the oils are inhaled, they can also be massaged into the skin or sometimes (although rarely) taken by mouth. You should never ingest essential oils by mouth without specific instruction from a trained and qualified specialist. Whether inhaled or applied on the skin, essential oils are gaining more and more attention as an alternative treatment for stress, infections, and other health problems. In many cases scientific evidence is still lacking to the exact benefits so it is best to seek advice from a trained specialist.

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants. Each contains a specific mix of active ingredients, and this combination determines what the oil can and should be used for. Some oils are used to promote physical healing -- for example, to treat swelling or fungal infections. Others are used for their emotional value -- they may enhance relaxation or make a room smell pleasant. Orange blossom oil, for example, contains a large amount of an active ingredient that is believed to have a calming effect.

What is the history of aromatherapy?
Essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6,000 years. The ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used them in cosmetics, perfumes, and drugs. Essential oils were also commonly used for spiritual, therapeutic, hygienic, and ritualistic purposes.

In modern times, Rena Maurice Gattefossa, a French chemist, noticed the healing properties of lavender oil when he applied it to a burn on his hand caused by an explosion in his laboratory. He then started to analyze the chemical properties of essential oils and how they were used to treat burns, skin infections, gangrene, and wounds in soldiers during World War I. In 1928, Gattefossa founded the science of aromatherapy. By the 1950s massage therapists, beauticians, nurses, physiotherapists, doctors, and other health care providers began using aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy did not become popular in the United States until the 1980s. Today, many lotions, candles, and beauty products are sold as "aromatherapy." However, many of these products contain synthetic fragrances that do not have the same properties as essential oils. It is important to seek true aromatherapy treatments from a trained and qualified specialist such as a esthetician.

What is microdermabrasion and how often can I have it done?

What is microdermabrasion?Microdermabrasion is a very popular, machine-assisted skin-exfoliating treatment. Microdermabrasion has advantages of low risk and rapid recovery compared to the other more invasive resurfacing methods such as dermabrasion, chemical peeling, and laser resurfacing. Since microdermabrasion produces only a very superficial depth of skin removal, it works best on improving conditions on the surface of the skin such as early photoaging (sun damage), fine lines, age spots, enlarged pores, acne, and superficial scarring. Although the face is the most common area for microdermabrasion, any skin area, including neck, chest, back, and hands, may be treated. Microdermabrasion is sometimes referred to as "microderm," lunchtime peel, Parisian Peel, and Diamond Peel.

How often can I have microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can be done as frequently as weekly or up to every eight weeks depending on your skin's tolerance and desired cosmetic effects. Many people choose to start with weekly treatments for three sessions, then change to a monthly maintenance regimen.

Typical microderm schedule:

Week 1: first session

Week 2: second session

Week 3: third session

Monthly: fourth through twelfth sessions

Much like brushing your teeth, microdermabrasion helps to gently remove plaque and skin debris. Since human skin typically regenerates at approximately 30-day intervals, skin improvement with microdermabrasion is temporary and needs to be repeated at average intervals of two to four weeks for continued improvement. Usually, multiple treatments (six to 12 sessions) are recommended to see a significant improvement.

Body Wraps: Natural Detox & Weight Loss

Body Wraps use food grade raw ingredients. The wrap is safe, even for children and people with various medical conditions. No salts or dehydrating clay or sea ingredients are used.

Effective: Enzyme active aloe penetrates through the protein wall that surrounds the fat cell to dissipate bulky toxins into the lymphatic system where it can be flushed away by drinking lots of water. The aloe and herb nutrients help restore elasticity and firm skin tissues close to the new body size as well as freshening your skin’s tone and texture. The product stays in the body for three days, so continued size and toxin loss will happen as the client drinks 3-4 liters of water daily.

Unlike some body wrap treatments that use elastic bandages or plastic tightly wrapped around the body to cause quick inch loss through perspiration and compression, the Set-N-Me-Free body wrap is a safe non-compression treatment. Many body wraps treatments use dehydrating salt, algae, seaweed, mud, clay, and cinnamon creams. Sometimes the client is required to exercise while wrapped to increase the compression. The Set-N-Me-Free Body Wrap Solution contains only aloe vera and herbs, and is not meant to be wrapped tightly. Come, enjoy and relax with the side effect of possible inch loss.  What more could you ask for?

SUNSCREEN is the #1 way to fight aging, and skin cancer.

Experts say the best way to stay protected from the sun is to stay out of the sun during its hottest hours (generally 11am-3pm, or when it’s directly overhead), and to re-apply sunscreen every two hours. They will tell you to look for sunscreens with the ingredients of either Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Avobenzene (parsol 1789), or Mexoryl. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are physical blockers, while Avobenzene and Mexoryl and chemical blockers.

Q: What type of sunscreen should I use, and what ingredients should I look for?
A: There are so many types of sunscreen that selecting the right one can be quite confusing.
• Avobenzone (parsol 1789),
• Cinoxate
• Ecamsule
• Menthyl anthranilate
• Octyl methoxycinnamate
• Octyl salicylate
• Oxybenzone
• Sulisobenzone
• Titanium dioxide
• Zinc oxide
BurnOut 18.6% Zinc Oxide Sunblock / SPF 32 for Sensitive Skin
To get a bit technical, you want your sunscreen to protect you against UVA and UVB rays. UVA is what is responsible for aging your skin, giving you wrinkles, and skin cancer. UVB is what causes your skin to darken and burn. While all the information I read is a bit conflicting, here is a general idea of how the wavelengths of UVA and UVB breakdown:

UVB (burning) has a wavelength range (in nanometers) of:
280-320
UVA (aging) has a wavelength range (in nanometers) of:
320-400

To get the best sun protection, you want your sunscreen to contain ingredients that cover as wide a range as possible in the 280-400 spectrum. Here’s how a few of the best and most common sunscreen ingredients breakdown:

Zinc Oxide 290-380
Mexoryl 290-400
Avobenzene 340-375
Titanium Dioxide 290-340
Octinoxate and Octisalate 280-320
Oxybenzone 320-240

Now many sunscreens combine ingredients to cover a wider range of the spectrum. However, you can see that Zinc Oxide and Mexoryl cover the widest spectrum all by themselves, and they are photo-stable ingredients. This is extremely important, because it means your sunscreen won’t lose effectiveness an hour after you apply it like Avobenzene, for example, which is not photo-stable.  Neutrogena and some other companies use Helioplex, or other ingredients to make their Avobenzene more photostable. I haven’t experimented with these ingredients, but I doubt they are as photo-stable as Zinc Oxide or Mexoryl.
Many new sunscreen ingredients that are approved in Japan and Europe, such as Mexoryl XL, Tinosorb M, Tinosorb S, Uvinil T 150, Uvasorb HEB, and Parsol SLX, have not been approved by the FDA for use in new sunscreens in the United States.

Chemical Peels - Action and Benefits

Chemical peeling is used to improve the skin’s appearance by applying a chemical solution to the skin, causing the top layers of skin to separate and peel off. The new skin is smoother, less wrinkled, more even in color, peels can also be used to improve acne. Chemical peels can be performed at different depths, depending on the layer of correction desired. Deeper peels will cause the skin to peel for a longer period of time and provide more improvements in the skin. There are also a variety of acids and peeling agents that can be used alone or together, depending on skin conditions to be treated.

Chemical exfoliation and peels involve using destructive chemical agents to create a controlled wound. All peels (whether they are chemical or laser) create a mild burn. They improve skin by the wound healing process, new tissue is created and damaged tissue is quickly replaced. Chemical peels stimulate the fibroblasts wound healing activity, the proliferation of fibroblast activity increases collagen and elastin. The depth of the wound determines the amount and intensity of healing. The body’s response to the burn is what yields the results, a deeper peel will result in more correction.

The terms exfoliation and chemical peel are often used interchangeably, however superficial peels are technically exfoliation not a true peel. True chemical peels are generally performed under medical supervision, and penetrate into the papillary dermis.

Chemical exfoliation and peels are a way to speed up the natural migration process of skin cells. When the bonds between cells are dissolved and epidermal cells begin to shed more rapidly. The shedding skin cells send signals for more cell division, which in turn forces keratinocytes to the top of the stratum corneum. This process helps treat acne, fade skin discoloration and leave the skin with a fresh new layer of skin on the surface.

*Dark skin types are more prone to complications such as hyperpigmentation and should go to a professional that is experienced in treating dark skin.

Waxing versus Shaving for Summer

Waxing versus Shaving is the question for Summer. Bathing suit season is upon us, bikini line hair removal is a must to look your best in your swimsuit. But just how are you going to get rid of that hair?

When you wax the hair is pulled out by the root, there is a 50% chance that some hair follicles will die resulting in fewer hairs growing back over time you will have less hair.

New hair will not grow back in the previously waxed area for four to eight weeks.

When you shave the hair is broke off at the surface and seems to grow back in minutes.

Shaving actually causes the hair to become thicker and sometimes you will actually create more hair, have you ever seen two hairs grow out of one follicle? Yup it is true.

So you ask what do I prefer, if you can't afford lazer hair removal waxing is the next best thing. I have had lazer hair removal and I was left with sparce, random hairs everywhere which is kinda annoying. Waxing those random hairs is a must, because like I said, eventually after waxing some of the hair follicles will die, and waalaa less hair.

Almost every part of the body can be waxed, and only 1/4 inch growth is required.

Beware the longer the hair the more it hurts, so be sure to trim up a little before you get waxed. Almost any area of the body can be waxed exception beards, and ears, but nostrils can be waxed and so can the bum. Other frequently waxed areas for women are legs, underarms, bikini line, eyebrows and face. For men: chest, legs, arms, and back.

Now lets talk Brazilian, no not the country. Although I have a cute story about a brazilian. I will tell if you ask. Anyway, brazilian can be preformed on men and women of brave stature.

Actually, it is not that bad when taking a relaxing or sedating medication.

The difference between a bikini and a brazilian is all or nothing. Well, it is left up to you how much my advice is to discuss your style with me your esthetician.

Now lets discuss the after care.
Avoid the sun immediately after waxing recently waxed areas are prone to hyperpigmentation (permanent darkening of the skin) if exposed to the sun. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and other heated sources for at least 48 hours.
Avoid heavy exercise for at least 24 hours after waxing.
Do not use exfoliating products (AHAs, scrubs, etc) and loofas for at least 24 hours after waxing as they might further irritate your skin.
Avoid tight clothing after waxing, especially in the waxed areas. Tight clothing may result in irritation and ingrown hairs.
Regular twice to three times per week exfoliation is helpful to remove dead skin so your hairs can get out above the surface of the pores and not become ingrown.
No hot baths, hot showers or sexual activity for 10 hours after a Brazilian. While your pores are open, they are vulnerable to irritation by the extreme temperatures and infection by bacteria. So, remember if you are suprising someone plan in advance!

The Fountain of Youth is how you handle the SUN

The sun’s UVA light is the #1 cause of premature aging in women and men and that 90 percent of wrinkles are caused by the sun? So now you know the #1 way to protect your skin against aging is SUNSCREEN.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends these PCA sun protection products as effective agents in the prevention of sun-induced skin damage.

  • Weightless Protection SPF 45
  • Perfecting Protection SPF 30
  • Protecting Hydrator SPF 30
  • Hydrator Plus SPF 30
  • Active Very Water/Sweat Resistant SPF 45

Make sure your sun products contain one or more of these ingredients:
  • zinc oxide,
  • titanium dioxide
  • avobenzone or ecampsule (MexorylTM
  • Chemical peels help to reduce the appearance of premature aging and are performed on the face, neck, or hands. They can be used to:

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging, and family history
  • Improve the appearance of mild scarring
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills (melasma)
  • Improve the look and feel of skin that is dull in texture and color

Microdermabrasion can make your skin look younger and smoother, as well. Although a great diet, plenty of water, and daily exercise help your skin to be shining and radiant

By removing a top layer of skin, microdermabrasion stimulates the skin to increase cell turnover and to produce collagen, which turns into softer, younger looking skin.

So keep the sunscreen handy as well as the hat and sunglasses – be good to your skin and you will keep that youthful look longer.

Spring Cleaning For Your Skin - Clean, Vacuum, Refresh

Clean, Vacuum, Refresh

Most skin blemishes begin as clogged pores. If you can keep your pores clean and unclogged, you will have fewer breakouts and more radiant skin. To have clean pores, you must maintain a regular skin-care routine at home and with your skin-care professional.

Clean - Once a month - detox facial - This facial penetrates pores to dissolve impactions and blackheads, kill bacteria, reduce inflammation and remove excess cell debris to leave the skin hydrated, purified and clean and clear.

Vacuum - Do a microdermabrasion - Relaxing facial vacuum massage to tighten skin. Dramatically improve skin tone and texture in just one treatment. What happens is that professional micro dermabrasion peels off the outermost layer of skin, abrading the blackheads off (or at least the head of the plug). The suction then effectively pulls out the remaining dirt and hardened oil from the pores. It also stimulates collagen production which increases elasticity in the skin (healthy, elastic skin is essential for keeping your pores tight).

Refresh - Have a Retinol Treatment - This is a cream mask containing natural phytohormones which plump, hydrate and moisturize aging skin. The retinol (vitamin A) content helps increase cell turnover to keep skin looking fresh, while vitamin C strengthens the skin by helping to increase the skin’s collagen and elastin network.

A regular skin care regimen and eating healthy can greatly enhance the beauty of your skin. The payoff is great with just a little care - Enjoy Spring and your skin in the new light!
